The Orange Door provides help and support for family violence, as well as families in need of support with the wellbeing and development of children.

Sometimes things at home or in a relationship are not OK and you need some help and support. The Orange Door is here to listen to you and help you to get the support you need quickly and easily.

If you are in immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000).

The Orange Door can help if:

  • You need help with parenting, or you are worried about the wellbeing or development of a child or young person.
  • Someone close to you is making you feel afraid or unsafe such as your partner, ex-partner, family member or carer.
  • You are a child or young person who doesn’t feel safe or cared for.
  • You are at risk of using abusive or controlling behaviour or you need help with these behaviours at home or in a relationship.
  • You are worried about the safety of someone you know.
  • You have experienced family violence, including controlling behaviour like someone monitoring where you go, who you visit or how you spend money.

The Orange Door can help by:

  • Listening to you and hearing what your worries are.
  • Working with you to identify the help and support you need.
  • Supporting you with the wellbeing and development of children and young people.
  • Helping you make a safety plan to keep you and your children safe.
  • Connecting you to services that can help, such as counselling, accommodation, family violence support, mental health and drug and alcohol services, parenting support groups, services for children, financial help, or legal assistance.
  • Supporting you to access funding for basic living expenses and other costs.
  • Working with you to help you change if you are using abusive or controlling behaviour at home or in a relationship.

How can I access The Orange Door?

The Orange Door is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday (closed on public holidays).

The Orange Door can work with you if you use communication aids or require an interpreter, including Auslan.

I need an interpreter

Let the service know if you need an interpreter. Let the service know:

  • your phone number
  • your language
  • when it is safe to call.

An interpreter will then call you back.

Is The Orange Door a service designed for me?

The Orange Door welcomes people of any age, gender, sexuality, culture, and ability. All cultural and religious preferences are respected. Let the worker know if you prefer to work with a male or female worker. The Orange Door works with multicultural services, LGBTI services and disability services to meet the diverse needs of individuals and families. Staff will give you information about options and connect you to the services you need.

If you are a migrant or a refugee or do not have permanent residency, we can still help you. Do not be afraid of seeking support because of your migration status This is a free service. Let The Orange Door workers know if you prefer to discuss your situation on the telephone or in person.

Where should I go when The Orange Door is not open?

Contact the following services outside these hours:

  • Men’s Referral Service on 1300 766 491 (8am-9pm Monday-Friday and 9am-6pm Saturday and Sunday and Public Holidays) (Men's family violence telephone counselling, information and referral service)
  • Safe Steps is a support service for victims of family violence 1800 015 188 (24 hours, 7 days a week). You can also email Safe Steps or use their live web chat support service
  • Victims of Crime helpline (for all victims of crime and adult male victims of family violence) 1800 819 817 or text 0427 767 891 (8am-11pm, every day)
  • The Sexual Assault Crisis Line is for victims of sexual assault 1800 806 292 (24 hours, 7 days a week)
